What do these numbers mean for a business author?
Three things stand out. First, adult nonfiction was down 3.5% year to date in mid-2026, so business books compete hard for attention; a book needs a clear reader and a plan to reach them. Second, marketing prices vary wildly for similar-sounding services, so ask exactly what you are buying. Third, the median author income figures are modest on either path.
That last point is why Big Impact Books encourages CEOs and business owners to measure a book by what it does for their business, such as authority, clients, media, and speaking, rather than by royalties alone. Questions about book sales and earnings
- Do self-published authors earn more than traditionally published authors?
- One survey suggests so. According to Writer Cosmos, ALLi’s 2025 survey found indie authors earn a median of $13,500 a year, nearly double the $6,000 to $8,000 median for traditionally published authors. Earnings vary enormously by genre, output, and marketing, so treat any median as a broad signal.
- Is selling 5,000 copies of a book good?
- For many nonfiction titles, 5,000 copies is a meaningful result, though “good” depends on genre, price, and goals. For a business owner, sales are only part of the picture: a book that brings in a handful of ideal clients or speaking engagements can be worth far more than its royalties.
- How much does a beginner author make per book?
- A beginner earns whatever their royalty rate produces on each sale. Writer Cosmos notes that self-published authors can keep up to 70% royalties on ebooks, while traditional royalties are set by contract. Multiply your list price by your rate to find your per copy earnings, then compare that with your goals.
- How much does it cost to market a book?
- Book marketing prices range widely. Manuscript Report’s 2026 review found $100 to $600 buys placements such as BookBub Featured Deals ($122 to $4,216 by genre), $500 to $2,500 buys a freelance marketer’s time, and one listed publicity campaign costs $9,499. BookBaby lists its book marketing services as starting at $399.
- Who is the highest paid book author?
- The answer changes from year to year as new releases, film deals, and backlist sales shift. Business publications such as Forbes periodically publish lists of top earning authors, so check the most recent list for a current answer. For most business authors, the more useful question is what the book can do for their business.
- Do readers live longer than non-readers?
- Some research has linked book reading with longer life. The most cited example is a 2016 study by Yale researchers published in Social Science and Medicine, which found an association between reading books and lower mortality. An association is not proof of cause, so read the study itself for its full methods and limits.
